Jennifer's Body 2009 Movie Review:
The film is a sexual assault allegory. That's the missing piece to its identity that you didn't figure out. Diablo Cody directed the sacrifice scene to mirror a sexual assault and the rest of the film shows Jennifer/Needy dealing with the aftermath of that.
One of the ways some people react to it is to become sexually aggressive themselves. She leaned on her friend but never told her what had happened. Her friend didn’t know how to help and ultimately “ended” the friendship. Now that she knows what happened, she is advocating for Jennifer by making sure the band can never do it again.
Even the filmmaker was frustrated by how the studio marketed it, because they very much played up the "come see hot girls kiss each other" in trailers and posters and people went to see it and were like "wait wtf is this" and panned it in the box offices. I think Oak was on point with its re-watchability factor. Once you know what to expect/not expect, you can just strap in for the ride!
Why 'Jennifer's Body' is More Terrifying Than You Think
This movie also points out big differences in how men and women see danger.Going off with a van full of women, going into the forest alone with a woman, going to an abandoned neighborhood and going into one of the houses alone with a woman...? Are these things that inspire ANY flight response in most men? No.
But women watching this film were constantly asking "What are you doing?! WHY are you going with her?!
It's so crazy (and telling) when men don't get what is happening in this movie. The example they give in this video of what makes this movie not terrifying is how the band is joking just before and singing while they are killing Jennifer. For me, it's one of the scariest parts. If we use the allegory of forced sexual course, it shows how men just see it as fun.
They don't care about her or her body - only how they can use it to get what they want. In this era of "your body, my choice" it's even more scary. Men simply don't care how it impacts us as long as they get what they want, and they'll laugh while doing it. Absolutely horrific.
